CQ TAFE students excel at WorldSkills competitions

Central Queensland TAFE students have excelled in their chosen fields during the 2009 WorldSkills Regional finals.

News in detail:

So far, students in Hairdressing,Carpentry, Engineering,Welding, andBusiness havecompeted inRockhampton,Gladstone andMackay.

Nadia Steinhardt is Central Queensland's most excited hairdresser, after winning the regional final of the WorldSkills Australia competition on July 26.

Eleven hairdressers from Rockhampton and Mackay sharpened their scissors and clipped locks off volunteers for the event, which was held at the cities CQ TAFE campuses.

Mrs Steinhardt, 21, of Studio Pedro Hair and Beauty in Rockhampton, was named the winner and will now compete in the national competition in Brisbane next year.

Nicole Sands of Wavelengths For Hair in Yeppoon achieved second place.

If Mrs Steinhardt is successful, she will then fly to London to compete in the International event.

In Gladstone, apprentices from local engineering firms competed in electrical and mechanical sections.

In Carpentry Chaise Pearce, Aaron Low and David Hermann competed against other apprentices in Mackay.

The trio had to construct a small room with doors as part of the competition. Their results should be known soon.

Winners will compete in the national event later in the year for the chance to compete in the international final in London.
