Jessica Knott has the wisdom to cherish Mackay's seniors

Friday, 27 August 2010 9:33AM - Mackay Campus

News in brief:

For an 18 year old, Jessica Knott knows the adage "respect your elders" better than most.

News in detail:

The Central Queensland Institute of TAFE Certificate III in Aged Care graduate is living the adage every week in her role as an assistant-in-nursing at the Resthaven on Quarry aged care facility in Mackay.

During Seniors Week 2010 (August 14-22), Jessica took the opportunity to remind people of the importance of meeting the needs of the elderly.

"They're lovely and I really enjoy caring for them," Jessica said.

"I just make sure they're comfortable."

Jessica, who started working part-time at the facility in July, said she was first inspired to get into the field of Aged Care by her grandmother.

"She wanted to look after the elderly too, but then she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and passed away," she said.

"If I was old enough when she was sick, I would have looked after her."

But while she couldn't help her grandmother, she said she was able to learn from qualified people who could.

She later enrolled at CQ TAFE and savoured the experiences and skills she acquired during her work placement at Resthaven.

"I got to learn about all the different types of care that different people need," she said.

"I want to keep working in the industry and maybe one day work overseas."

Mary Anne Edwards, owner and operator of Resthaven, said Jessica was one of 13 CQ TAFE graduands working at the facility.

"The good thing about TAFE is that they help foster the students who have the calling for aged care," she said.

"As potential employers it's good for us to see the students in the workplace and where there is an opportunity (as in Jessica's case), we'd always offer employment to someone who applies themselves.

"We need to train up more people like Jessica so we can ensure that the elderly continue to be cared for into the future."
