CQ TAFE will be hosting the CQ Regional WorldSkills events from May at its Rockhampton, Mackay and Gladstone campuses - and is seeking competitors!

Update: CQ TAFE bricklaying teacher Peter Carr trains gold medallist
Peter Carr, CQ TAFE Rockhampton bricklaying teacher Peter Carr was instrumental in helping Todd Richards securing a gold medal at the Worldskills Australia final in Sydney last year.

Three CQ TAFE-trained apprentices secured medals at the WorldSkills Australia Nationals!
Todd Richards is now Australia's top bricklayer and Brandon Gillett the nation's best Turner after taking home gold at the event at Olympic Park in Sydney.

Ten Central Queensland Institute of TAFE-trained students will compete at the Worldskills Australia National competition at Olympic Park in Sydney from August 30 to September 1, 2012 in the categories of Auto-Mechanics, Heavy Vehicles, Welding, Electrical Installation, Fitting, Turning, Bricklaying and Beauty.
Below are some profiles of the competitors. Please show your support for these students, who we wish the best of luck at the competition!
Competitor Profile - Todd Richards
Name: Todd James Richards
D.O.B: 17/05/1988
Residence: Hay Point, Mackay
Competition Category: Bricklaying
Employer: Sommerfeld & Sons Bricklayers, Mackay
Todd won first place in the Regional finals of Worldskills, held at CQ TAFE's Rockhampton campus in September last year. He is only the second Central Queensland bricklaying apprentice to make it to the nationals since 1994.

Name: Shenae Dunbar
D.O.B.: 29/12/1993
Residence: Kabra
Competition Category: Beauty Therapy
Employer: Shateau 25 Beauty Room, Gracemere
Shenae has achieved a lot in just a few years, finding employment in a local beauty salon and earning a spot in the CQ TAFE team to Worldskills.

Name: Clay Scott
D.O.B.: 4/4/1990
Residence: Gracemere
Competition Category: Auto-Mechanical
Employer: Ian Weigh Toyota Rockhampton
Clay won second place in the Central Queensland regional finals while working as an apprentice for Allenstown Auto. He earned a spot in the nationals after the first place getter was unable to compete. Clay is now a mechanic at Ian Weigh.

Employer: Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL)
Matthew recently became a fully fledged Fitter and Turner for QAL after completing his apprenticeship. Matthew achieved first place in the regional Worldskills finals, securing himself a spot in the nationals.

Employer: CQ Diesel Fitting
Mitch completed his certificate III in Diesel Fitting at Central Queensland Institute of TAFE in Rockhampton and now works for CQ Diesel Fitting in Gladstone.

Name: Kia Garthwaite
D.O.B.: 5/6/1992
Residence: Gladstone
Competition Category: Electrical Installation
Employer: Gladstone Ports Corporation
Kia is one of a small number of female tradies at Gladstone Ports Corporation. She took up an apprenticeship in electrical installation when she decided she didn't want to be an office girl.

Brandon was always mechanically minded and decided to take up a fitting and turning apprenticeship after his brother completed a similar one.
