Learning how to lead

Tuesday, 3 June 2008 11:27AM - Rockhampton Campus

News in brief:

Donna Smalley has drawn inspiration from a CQ TAFE leadership workshop in Rockhampton last week.

News in detail:

The teacher aide is considering a career change and is studying with the aim of growing personally.

She was part of a group undertaking the two-day leadership workshop at the Canning Street campus.

"This has been good because it's made me go out of my comfort zone and push myself," Ms Smalley said.

"I've taken everything on board and (teacher) Kim (Harrington) gives you that sense of empowerment and makes you think you can do these things.
"It's been excellent."

Ms Smalley said the workshop involved simulating situations and analysing them, working in small teams and brain-storming to find solutions.

"It's been very hands-on.
"I've enjoyed opening my mind to what leadership is and learning about the different styles of management."

Shawn Power was selected by his employer Greening Australia to attend the workshop.

"I picked up a lot of things I wouldn't have thought about in managing within the resources I have," Mr Power said. "It's given me lots of food for thought.

"I highly recommend it to anyone who is in a supervisory role.

"Being a supervisor can be challenging, especially if you've got guys who are older than you.

"I will be taking a lot away with me and doing my best to establish all the stuff I've learnt," he said.
