An apprentice or trainee is a person employed under a training agreement. Apprenticeships and traineeships provide a combination of employment and structured training. An apprentice or trainee is contracted to an employer for a nominal period of time, enabling them to successfully gain competence in a trade (apprenticeship) or vocational area (traineeship).

Apprenticeships are long term contracts of 3-5 years in trades such as auto mechanics, hairdressing or electrical trades.

Traineeships are shorter term, 12-18 months, and encompass training in a wider variety of skills, including business, community service or hospitality and tourism areas.
