Training for the Resources Industry

GIQ Coal Surface Generic Induction

Effective 1 October 2010, coal mines in Queensland have to comply with Recognised Standard 11: Training in Coal Mines which is a new Standard for meeting health and safety obligations in the coal mining industry in Queensland. To meet this obligation, the Mining Industry Skills Centre has released the GIQ Coal Surface program.

GIQ Coal Surface is a program owned and managed by the Mining Industry Skills Centre. Central Queensland Institute of TAFE is licensed by the Skills Centre to deliver the program.

Entry Requirements

The GIQ Coal course is for anyone already working in the Queensland coal mining industry. GIQ is primarily for short-term contractors who move between multiple sites and have current industry experience relevant to their role. Examples of this experience include, but are not limited to, trade experience, heavy industry experience, or mining experience.

Hot topic!

The Mining Industry Skills Centre has launched a new induction product to help provide a pathway for new entrants to the resources industry.

GIQ New Entrant is designed for cleanskins or individuals who are not able to demonstrate that they have transferable skills or relevant industry experience and are not currently working in the industry. Click here to view the program information for GIQ New Entrant.

Course Structure

The GIQ Coal Surface course includes an industry specific module and core learning.

Central Queensland Institute of TAFE uses high-technology simulation through the incorporation of Project Canary, a games-based simulation training tool, plus group activities and role playing to accelerate learning.
