Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety (BSB41407)

Course summary

This is a course for Occupational Health and Safety Practitioners and Workplace Health and Safety Officers seeking to further their skills, knowledge and career opportunities in occupational health and safety. This course addresses a range of competencies representing the key areas of work undertaken by an Occupational Health and Safety Practitioner or Officer in a full-time dedicated role who works under the supervision of an Occupational Health and Safety Manager.

 

Please note that in the state of Queensland, a statutory course must be completed to attain the qualification of Workplace Health and Safety Officer. Under the Queensland Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995, employers and principal contractors are required to appoint a suitably qualified Workplace Health and Safety Officer for workplaces with thirty or more workers.

 

Units of Competency

 

Nine (9) units must be completed: Seven (7) core units; and two (2) elective units.

 

What will I receive?

 

On successful completion students will receive a Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety or a Statement of Attainment for competencies completed.

Entry requirements

 

It is desirable but not essential that entrants have completed Certificate III in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent qualifications or work experience. Entrants must have sound literacy and numeracy skills to undertake the components of this course. Consideration will be given to your academic and/or work histories. Students should be computer literate, as course materials are provided electronically. 

 

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

 

Your history of study, skills and experience does matter. Consideration is given to your prior life and work experiences as well as formal and informal training. This may be applied using the national standard for Mutual Recognition or through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Documentary evidence will be requested. Delivery Method

This course is currently offered via external (distance education) mode.

Hours of Study

Approximately 400 hours of study time will be involved however, the training duration will depend on the electives and study mode selected. Training is conducted externally, through flexible delivery, and it is recommended that trainees attend the one week on-campus component held at Mackay Campus of CQ TAFE. Trainees must speak to the teacher prior to enrolling. Trainees can enrol at any time of the academic year.

Career prospects

The aim of this course is to develop the skills and knowledge required to fulfil supervisory positions with a major workload in occupational health and safety, and undertake work functions as an Occupational Health and Safety Practitioner, Occupational Health and Safety Advisor or Occupational Health and Safety Officer. Trainees will develop substantial background knowledge and skills required by a Workplace Health and Safety Practitioner.
