Indigenous and South Sea Islander Program

The Indigenous and South Sea Islander Unit provides a vital link with local Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian South Sea Islander communities to facilitate the delivery of culturally appropriate vocational education and training services.
Indigenous Women on the Move
Central Queensland Institute of TAFE offered a new course, Indigenous Women on the Move, for Indigenous women aged 15 to 25 years in the Mackay and Sarina region who would like to train in trade areas. Students were not expected to have previous qualifications or knowledge prior to enrolment. There were no costs to the participants. All fees, equipment and other expenses were covered.
The Indigenous Women on the Move program started in February through Central Queensland Institute of TAFE's Mackay campus. The course will be completed in June 2009 and is a working partnership with local industry, community groups and employers.
The program has been especially designed as the result of consultation with industry, the Indigenous community, employers and state government departments. This course is funded by a grant from the Office of Women's Indigenous Working Women's Fund; designed to encourage a career path for Indigenous women in non-traditional industries.
On completion of the program, participants will:
-
apply safe work practices
-
use hand and power tools
-
apply workplace health and safety polices and procedures
-
organise and complete daily work activities
-
apply safe welding practices
-
operate a forklift
The program also covers the Construction Industry Blue Card and workplace health and safety.
