When assessing applications for entry to a formal course in TAFE Queensland, a number of factors are considered. Generally applicants must satisfy Academic and English entry requirements. TAFE Queensland reserves the right to accept or deny entry.
Academic requirements
All TAFE Queensland international courses and programs have specific minimum academic entry requirements. Applicants must provide authorised original documentary evidence (or certified copies) of meeting the required proficiency as listed for each course. An offer of place will remain conditional on satisfying the academic or English entry requirements until the appropriate documentary evidence is provided.
The TAFE Queensland academic/education requirements guide provides a general indication of academic standards for each country.
English language requirements
International students whose first language is not English must satisfy one of the following English language proficiency requirements:
-
IELTS (academic module) - Score of 5.5 (with no individual band score of less than 5), or
-
TOEFL - Score 530 (paper-based test), 195 (computer-based score), or
-
International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) - minimum individual score 3, or
-
First Cambridge Certificate of English - A or B Grade, or
-

successful completion of an acceptable formal course (not ELICOS) where the medium of instruction throughout the course is English.
Please note:
-
English language test results are valid for 12 months only.
-
Original documentary evidence or certified copies must be provided.
-
CQ TAFE reserves the right to accept or deny entry.
-
The requirements set out above may not necessarily be the requirements a student must meet to obtain a student visa.
Special academic entry
Consideration for special entry to a formal course may be granted to mature age students (generally over 20 years of age) who can provide evidence of prior work or life experience in an area related to the course. Applicants are required to provide details of the nature and duration of the work undertaken, the level of responsibility and a reference(s) from employer(s). Mature age applicants must also satisfy English language requirements, specified above.
Students transferring from an Australian high school
Applicants wishing to transfer from high school to TAFE Queensland before completing their high school studies must satisfy the entry requirements outlined above. They must also obtain from the Principal of the school:
-
written permission to transfer or a letter of release
-
statement of attendance.
Students transferring from other Australian institutions
Applicants wishing to transfer from an Australian institution into TAFE Queensland must satisfy the entry requirements outlined above and provide:
-
a letter of release from the existing institution
-
a statement of attendance from the existing institution.
Overseas student health cover (OSHC)
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is compulsory for any study which is over 12 weeks long (i.e. if you have a student visa).
International students have the option of paying OSHC fees directly to Central Queensland Institute of TAFE, as we are able to pay all OSHC fees to our elected health fund. Students also have the option to make their own arrangements for health cover. We will record on a student's E-COE whether or not he/she has paid the OSHC directly to Central Queensland Institute of TAFE.
If a student has not paid OSHC to Central Queensland Institute of TAFE, he or she will be required to demonstrate to the Australian Embassy that health cover has been paid, at the time of applying for the student visa.
Please note:
OSHC does not apply to Swedish or Norwegian students.
